Joint Replacement Overview
Definition

Avascular necrosis: blood supply to joint disappears
Each joint replacements digs out more bone - eventually will run out (bc it is likely more than one surgery will occur)

Total Hip Replacement
Definition

Broken hip - neck of femur

Caused by arthritis, fracture, possibly childhood


Surgery is done when the pain is too much to function, day and night


Physical therapy: Day of or day after surgery it is improtant to get them walking and get hip straightened

Complications and Precautions of Hip Replacements
Definition

Complications: infection, blood clot - can die in surgery if not enough bone

leg length inequality

loosening of implant or wearing out of implant

Nerve/blood vessel injury and bleeding

it is likely surgery will need to be repeated


Precautions:

do not cross legths, or do in and out drastic mvmts

pillow between legs when sleeping


Protecting the Hip:

Regular light exercise for flexibility

tell dentist because antibiotics can cause inflammation

Definition

Cause: Osteoarthritis

Ligament shot so bone is grinding bone

Trying to have replacement be more functional so patient can run or walk with it

Recovery varies by age and activity level

It is getting less invation

Complications

possible infections

blood clots especially if person is immobile

continued pain

implant problems

neurovascular injury


Physical therapy: 

exercise knee day of or after surgery

continuous passive mvmt machine

Resume most activities after 3-6 weeks

Normal household activities

Specific exercise for the knee


Protecting the Knee Replacement

Regular light exercise

Tell dentist

avoid falls

continue seeing OT
