A mood that expresses necessity, uncertainty, doubt, desire, and emotion. Used primarily in dependent clauses introduced by che. Involves a CHANGE IN SUBJECT. Some verbs and expressions that call for the subjunctive are:

avere bisogno (to need)
pensare (to think)
dubitare (to doubt)
(non) credere (to (not) believe)
desiderare (to desire)
volere (to want)
preferire (to prefer)
sperare (to hope)
essere contento (to be happy)
temere/avere paura (to be afraid)
essere triste (to be sad)
dispiacere (to be sorry)

Also used with many impersonal expressions.
