Term
What is the smallest unit we can record?
Definition
Receptors.
Term
What do current and voltage clamps measure?
Definition

- Current clamp: intracellular, population, currents in the cell, the neurons themselves

- Voltage clamp: whole cell patch, all receptors of one cell

Term
What is membrane potential?
Definition

In living cells there is a potential difference between the inside and outside of the cell.

When a channel opens, this difference makes ions flow. This generates current, which we can record.

Term

- What kind of patch clamp recording is this?

- What does 0pA and 2pA refer to?

Definition

- Singe channel recording / voltage clamp

- 0pA = channel is closed, 2pA = channel is open

Term

- What kind of patch recording is this?

Definition
- Whole-cell / voltage clamp
Term

- What kind of patch recording is this?

- What are the spikes?

Definition

- Whole-cell / current clamp

- We're clamping the current, which allows us to measure the voltage (the pressure that pushes the current)

Term
What sorts of questions can whole cell recordings answer?
Definition

- What are the characteristics of individual cells?

- What are the receptor population and dynamics like?
