Allow Respondent Considerable Freedom in Determining the AMount and Kind of Information to Provide

 

Advantages:  Encourage EE to talk, Reveal thoughts, Build Trust

 

Disadvantages:  Single anser can consume significant portion of interview time, EE may give unimportant/irrelevant information

Narrow in Focus & Restrict EEs Freedom to Determine Amount and Kind of Information to Provide

 

Advantages:  Permit RR to control lenght of answers and guide EE, require little effort from EE, allow RR to ask more questions in given time

 

Disadvantages:  Stifle volunteering, Do not reveal "why",RR talks more than EE

Definition

Primary-Introduce Topics or New Areas Within a Topic

 

Ex:  How did you become interested in veterinary medicine?

 

Secondary-Attempt to Discover Additional Info Following a Primary Question, Often Called "Probing" Questions.  Types include:  Silent, Nudging, Clearinghouse, Informational, Restatement, Reflective, Mirror

 

Ex:  Tell me more about that?

Definition

Neutral-Allow EE to decide upon answers without overt direction/pressure from RR

 

Ex:  Do you like pizza?

 

Leading-Suggest teh answer expected or desired because the RR leads the EE towards a particular answer. 

 

Ex:  I assume you like pizza?

Ex:  The Double Barreled Inquisition-Asking two or more questions at the same time instead of a singe, precise question.  EE unlikely to answer both questions
