  • An infection that affects the innermost layer of the heart
  • Affects the valves
  • Most valve problems cause a murmur

  • Malaise
  • Fever
  • Vascular manifestations -- petechiae, lines in fingernails, osler nodes (painful), janesway lesions (not painful), roth spots (in retina)
  • Murmur
  • Blood clots throughout body
  • Mital and aortic valves most affected
  • Subacute symptoms are longer and more drawn out
