Term
What is a "dry" signal?
Definition
A signal input from the musicians intrument that has no processor effects on it. Reverb heard is created by the room.
Term
What does a compressor do?
Definition
Compressors alter the dynamics or difference between low and high volume within an audio signal. Takes out sharp pekas in order to maximize volume with out having distortion.
Term
What is an equilizer used for?
Definition
Used to alter the levels of different frequencies in a sound. Allows, for example, and tamborine and a bass to be on the same track and controlled with out affecting the other.
Term
What is a gate?
Definition
controls the amplitude of a signal with basically 2 states; open and closed.
Term
Dynamic processing consists of what 3 devices?
Definition
Compressors, equilizers, and gates.
Term
Define "wet" signal?
Definition
a signal effected by an external processor.
Term
What is a reverb?
Definition
Reverb simulates different room sizes by imitating acoustic reflections.
Term
What is a delay?
Definition
allows us to create distinct repetitions of sounds, essentially echoes.
Term
What sound does "flanging" create, and how?
Definition
It creates a swishing or tunneling sound by playing 2 signals in phase and altering one of the signals speed.
Term
The phrase "Tell Granny Mom Knows about my ugly new piercing" helps us remember what. The metric conversion chart.
Definition
TGMK-muNP Tera Giga Mega Kilo - milli micro nano pico
Term
Moving 1 space either direction on the conversion chart means move how many decimal places which direction?
Definition
THree the same way.
Term
Wavelength = what/what
Definition
speed of wave(1130 ft/sec)/freq of wave in Hz
Term
Moving twice the distance from the sound source does what to the sound level?
Definition
-6dB
Term
If I'm 30 feet away from a speaker and its at 90 db how far away do I have to move to be at 78 dB?
Definition
120 feet total, 90 feet further away
Term
How would you calculate the decibel change when you can't use exact doubles?
Definition
use this formula 20log(DR/DM) DR = Reference Distnace DM = Measured Distance
Term
Ohm's Law states that if we have 2 of the following electrical properties we can calculate a third. What are the properties and the units they are measured in?
Definition
Power in Watts
I is current in Amps
Electromotive Force in Ohms
Resistance in Ohms
Z Impedence in Ohms
PIERZ WAVOO
Term
What are the three elements of a film soundtrack?
Definition
Dialogue, Sound Effects, Music
Term
What 2 people capture the dialogue on set as it happens?
Definition
The Boom operator, and the production audio mixers.
Term
What does ADR stand for and how does it work?
Definition
Automated Dialogue Replacement, Talent comes into the studio and redoes lines in a controlled environment.
Term
What is room tone and why is it needed?
Definition
A recording of the silence of a room, placed underneath the ADR vocal track to take us back to that same environment.
Term
What does a Foley artist do?
Definition
Uses their immense amount of props to record new sounds for the movie.
Term
What are designed sounds?
Definition
Invented sounds, taking normal sounds and layering them or adding effects to them to create a new sound.
Term
What are the 2 aspects of music for movies?
Definition
Original Score, composed new music for film. Source music, pre-recorded music used in the film.
Term
What are pre-dubs/pre-mixes?
Definition
The process of mixing all of the sound elements so that the final mix can be accomplished with less work.
Term
What are Stems?
Definition
They are the final elements of a soundtrack that when combined make up the finished mix of the film.
Term
What is the difference between presentation boards and storyboards?
Definition
Presentation boards only feature key elements of a project, used to present to a client. Storyboards are entire works laid out shot by shot. (Production Boards)
Term
If a camers TURNS left or right during a shot, what is that called?
Definition
Panning
Term
What is the motion we move the camera in to show tall objects or to follow a subject up or down?
Definition
Tilt
Term
Moving inwards or away from an object is called...
Definition
a Dolly shot.
Term
A shot that runs parallel to a scene generally mounted on rails, is called...
Definition
A truck shot. or trucking
Term
What is the difference between a crane and a jib?
Definition
A crane brings both people and camera off the ground. A jib arm can be controlled from the ground by the operator, had camera on opposite end.
Term
What is timecode and what is it's format?
Definition
Timecode is a frame specific address of a film, used mostly for editing.
hour:min:sec:frame
Term
What is the formula for finding area of a rectangle and what unit will the answer be?
Definition
A=LW answer measured in units squared
Term
What formula would you use to calculate the surface are of a box?
Definition
2(lw + ld + wd) also measured in units squared bcause it deals with area.
Term
When calculating the volume of a cube, what is the formula you would use?
Definition
V=LWD (length width depth) measured in units cubed.
Term
when talking about triangles, what is the total sum of all 3 angles ALWAYS?
Definition
180 degrees
Term
What is the formula used when trying to find the length of an unknown side of a triangle?
Definition
A2+B2=C2
Term
What formula is used to find the area of a triangle and what is the answer measured in?
Definition
A=1/2(LW) measured in units squared.
Term
What is th formula to find the circumference of a circle?
Definition
C=pi*diameter pi = 3.14
Term
Finding area of a circle requires what formula?
Definition
A=pi*r2 r = radius
Term
what is an easy way to remember the formulas dealing with distnace velocity and time?
Definition
DTV, Distance in the top of the pyramid, Distance and time in the bottom.
Term
What are the 3 formulas for finding distance, velocity, and time?
Definition
V=D/T, T=D/V, D=T*V
Term
When dealing with sound delay, how would you find out what the delay is?
Definition
delay = distance/1130ftsec (speed of sound)
Term
What happens to dB level when we double the amount of speakers we are using?
Definition
We add 3 dB to it.
Term
What are the 3 parts of an advertisement?
Definition
The psychology of the color, the Layout, and the Copy.
