What does occupancy mean?  How many major groups does the CBC classify occupancy into?
Definition
Occupany is the type of use assigned to a building or space.  There are 12 major occupancy groups.

What is mixed occupancy?
Definition
When a building or area of a building contains two or more occupancies.  Each occupancy must be separated  from other occupancies by a fire barrier based on CBC table 508.3.3).  Separation is from 1 - 4 hours.  If building has an automated sprinkler system, hourly rating can usually be reduced by 1 hour.

What is an accessory occupancy?
Definition
A space or room used in conjunction with the main occupancy but that does not exceed 10% of the floor area of the main occupancy.  Accessory occupancies do not need to be separated with a fire barrier (example, gift shop in a hospital).

What is an incidental use area?
Definition
An area that accompanies the main occupancy that might normally be considered an accessory occupancy by is not because of special,potentially dangerous conditions (boiler room). Must be separated from main occupancy by 1 hour fire barrier or have automated sprinkler system.
