Term
What is Darcy's Law
Definition
Q = -K A (dh/dl)

Q is discharge (gallons/minute or meters cubed/second),
K is material dependant (derived),
A is area (meters or ft square),
dh/dl is distance height over distance lenght (meters or feet)
Term
Define and explain UTM
Definition
Universal Transverse Mercadur
metric mapping system based on distance from a base location
Term
What are the three most common mapping systems?
Definition
UTM, Township Range Section, and Lattitude Longitude
Term
Stereotypic features of till
Definition
faceted, poorly sorted,
Term
Stereotypic features of a river deposit
Definition
rounded, partly sorted, medium relative size (smaller than till and larger than lacustrine)
Term
Define watershed
Definition
A ridge of high land dividing two areas that are drained by different river systems
Term
Law of Conservation of Mass;
Hydrologic form
Definition
inflow = outflow +/- change in storage
Term
meteoric water
Definition
ground water which is relativly active in the hydrologic cycle
Term
connate water
Definition
water which has been trapped in a geologic unit for a long period of time (geologic time)
Term
magmatic water
Definition
"new water"; given off by magma durning volcanic eruptions
Term
What is the difference between magma and lava?
Definition
Magma is bellow the earth's surface, lave is magma which has breached the crust
Term
What is a hydrograph?
Definition
A linear model showing a water source's discharge, "Q", over time.
Term
What is evapotranspiration?
Definition
a combined term for evaporation and transpiration; in context, transpiration applies to the hydrologic cycle and the water lost during photosynthesis but water is also lost due to direct evaporation. Calculations of evaporatoin and transpiration are hard to seperate out and thus are ususally lumped together.
Term
vadose
Definition
unsaturated zone of materials above the water table, capilary fringe takes place here
Term
Capillary fringe
Definition
what which extends up into the vadose zone due to capilary action
Term
unconfined aquifer
Definition
open to atmosphere
Term
confined aquifer
Definition
blocked from the atmosphere by a confining bed, or aquitard.
Term
isohyet (isohyetal)
Definition
a contour line depicting precipitation
Term
piezometric surface
Definition
the 'water table' of a confined aquifer
Term
artesian
Definition
a well is considered artesian is the pieziometric surface rises above the top of the aquifer
Term
porosity
Definition
a measure of the void spaces within a material
Term
permeability
Definition
rate / ability of movement
Term
What is the formula to determine porosity?
Definition
N = 100 Volume voids (Vv) / Volume (V)
Term
principle of superpostion
Definition
sedimentary layers are deposited in a time sequence with the oldest on the bottom and youngest on the top
Term
Stereotypic lacustrine deposit
Definition
well sorted, fine grained, well bedded
Term
Define head
Definition
the total energy or force on water; pressure, elevation, and velocity
Term
define hydrostatic pressure
Definition
pressure of water on water from overlying water (not usually on rocks or from rocks)
Term
lithostatic pressure
Definition
pressure of rocks on rocks from rocks (not ususally on water or from water)
Term
homogenious aquifer
Definition
same material throught the aquifer
Term
heterogenious
Definition
sligt differences within the aquifer
Term
isotropic aquifer
Definition
the properties of the aquifer are the same in any direction
Term
anisotropic
Definition
the properties of the aquifer are different in various directions
