Term
Glycogenesis
Definition
formation of glycogen from sugar.  It's the storage form of glucose in liver and muscle.  In muscle, it's stored to be readily available for energy.  In liver, it maintains blood glucose levels in between meals.
Term

 Glucogenesis Steps

(after meal)

Definition

1.Glucose -->(enzyme: glucokinase!) to G-6-PO4

2. --> G-1-PO4 (mustase moves it to stop it from going to glycolysis)

3. UTP gives it another PO4...which brings it to the primer

4.  Glycogen synthase liberate the UDP if primer is present

5. A branching enzyme makes a branch to store it as glycogen!

Term

Glycogenolysis (Breaking it down to glucose)

Definition

1. Glycogen is debranched by glycan transfase enzyme.  Now it's a straight chain of G-1-PO4

2. -->G-6-P04

3. If in muscle cell, the G-6-PO4 goes to glycolysis for energy.  If in liver cell PO4 is taken off to supply glucose to body cell.

Blood sugar is now in steady state: 80-110 mg/L

Term
What controls glycogenolysis and glycogenisis?
Definition

Epinephrine and Glucagon.

Glycogenesis (ate carbs and want to make glycogen):::Glycogen Synthase -P is turned ON while phosphorylase -P is OFF

IS RECIPROCAL!!

Term
Gluconeogenesis
Definition

Converting non-CHO's (ie lipids and proteins) to glucose to control blood glucose if on a low/no carb diet or while sleeping.

Occurs in liver and kidney
