Term
Multicellular organism
Definition
Human being, composed of trillions of cells packaged in multicellular fluid. Waste products must be removed not to polute extra cellular fluid.
Term
Unicellular
Definition
Unicellular can live in ponds, Transport nutrients & excrete waste products directly into their environment. It is a single cell.
Term
Homeostasis
Definition
Consistancy of blood interval environment: This is maintained when extracellular fluid has appropriate concentrations of glucose, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen & electrolytes (they produce potasium & sodium)
Term
Ideal Homeostasis requirements
Definition
Glucose - 80mg/dl
Oxygen- 100 mmhg
Carbon dioxide 40mmhg
PH 7.4
Sodium 142
Potasium meq/l
Temperature 37 C
Term
Organ systems
Definition
Help maintain Homeostasis.
Term
Circulatory systems
Definition
Transport essential substances to cells & remove metabolic waste products
Term
Renal system
Definition
Removes waste waste and excretes into urine; regulate body fluid.
Term
Respitory system
Definition
Supplies oxygen & removes excess C02 from blood.
Term
Gastrointestinal system
Definition
Digests food & abosrbs products of digestion
Term
Integumentary system
Definition
Protects body against injury and dehydration
Term
Musculoskelatal system
Definition
locomotion
Term
Nervous & endocrine funtion
Definition
Regulate cell function
Term
Reproductive system
Definition
Perpetuation of species
Term
Renel and resiratory system
Definition
maintain PH of body fluids
Term
Cardiovascul, renal & nervous system
Definition
Keep blood pressure at 120/80 mmHG
Term
Digestive & Enocrine system
Definition
Provide normal blood levels of glucose
Term
Respiratory system
Definition
Maintains normal levels of oxygen & carbon dioxide in arterial blood
Term
Renal and endocrine systems
Definition
maintain normal level of sodium potassium & calcium in extracellular fluid.
Term
Negative feedback loop
Definition
Room temperature control system. Consists of Thermostat, furnace, thermometer & thermostat which compares desired room temperature. Thermostat uses difference between two readings to generate error signal is positive when the set point is higher than the actual temperature. (room is colder than desired) and negative when (room is hotter than desired). This functionality automatically maintains heating furnace at optimal levels.
Term
Cell comunication
Definition
this is done via gap junction.
