Term
Homeostasis
Definition

Homeostasis is the process of keeping the environment inside the bodoy fairly constant.

Aspects of the internal environment that the body needs to regulate:

  • core body temp.
  • pH and body fluids
  • concentration of gluscose in the blood
  • concentration of o2 and co2 in the blood and other body fluids
  • blood pressure
  • concentration of metabolic wastes
Term
Feedback Systems
Definition

Feedback system/Feedback loop, is a situation where the response to a stimulus modifies the stimulus.

Negative Feedback=

In homeostatic mechanisms the response has the effect of reducing or eliminating the stimulus that caused it.

Positive Feedback=

The response to a stimulus reinforces and intensifies the stimulus-greater response. cannot result in homeostasis and this is an important process that must be completed quickly!

Term
Glycogenesis
Definition

The formation of glycogen from other carbohydrates, especially glucose

  • Stimulated by the pancreatic hormone- insulin
  • Insulin= hormone, secreted by the pancreas, that decreases blood sugar level
Term
Glycogenolysis
Definition

Breakdown of glycogen to glucose

  • Occurs in the liver
  • Gluscose is formed and then released into the blood, and the blood sugar level rises.
Term
Gluconeogenesis
Definition
Conversion of fats or proteins into glucose
