-divided into three zone contaning cells that secrete three different steroid hormones

-the inner region of the adrenal gland underneath the cortex

-functions like the nervous system

-cells here produce catecholamines like epinephrine (adrenaline)

-located in the neck

-usually consists of two lobes

-contains thyroid follicles

-located in the thyroid gland

-have a simple epithelium consisting of follicular cells

-surround material called colloid (solid material, not a cell)

-synthesize, store, process, and secrete thyroid hormones.

Parafollicular Cells

-surround the colloid and are located between the follicular cells on the thyroid gland

-synthesize and secrete calcitonin, a hormone that decreses calcium levels

-located on the surface of, or are embedded in,  the thyroid gland

-usually four of them

- shaped like a pinecone and located within the brain

-contains pinealocytes and glial cells

- located in the pineal gland

-the major cell type and they secrete melatonin

Glial Cells

-located in the Pineal gland

-function as supporting cells for pinealocytes
