Definition
Who: An American Revolutionist, actually started out with despised jobs which he hated, but then his friend Ben Franklin gave him a job writing at Pennsylvania Magazine where he became the editor.

What: Wrote "Common Sense," a pamphlet strongly arguing against colonial government and George III and others like the crisis & Rights of Man.

When: Early 1776

Where: American Colonies

Significance: He used media and the press to go against the governments and spark revolutionary ideas. "Liberal instigator of the American Revolution" and a key figure.

Definition
Who: Usually a parent country with it's colonized nation (example: Britain with America.)

What: Britain did not strictly govern America, leading them mostly through isolation to resort to self-government, which they succeeded.

When: About 1600-1763

Where: America/Britain (but it can be any mother country and it's colony.)

Significance: Britain tried to put taxes on America like the Stamp Act, and because America was not only used to governing themselves but successful at it, it led them to want to gain their independence.

Who: Britain tax on America

What: After the 7 Year War, Britain taxed many documents in America to reduce their war debt.

When: 1765

Where: Americas

Significance: These taxes were Britain's first attempt at directly taxing America and it led to great resistance. "No taxation without representation" in Parliament. One of the causes of the American Revolution.

Definition
Who: Parliament representing all segments of French society.

What: Three estates- first estate (clergy), second estate (hobility), third estate (others.)

When: First called after 200 years in 1789 by Louis XVI (May 5)

Where: Versailles, France.

Significance: The third estate was being taxed only and literally had no power in the government. There was so much debt from the kings, and the least able were expected to pay. Meeting at Versailles to see if the 1st and 2nd could pay, but they were locked out. Led to Tennis Court Oath which led to the French Revolution.
