Arachne insulted Athene and the two had a weaving competition. (Athene wins) and Arachne hangs herself and Athene turns her into a SPIDER

Fights with Athene (Athena) b/c he was threatening the people of Athens. Athena protects the people and the people of Greece name the city after her.

3 Categories to Underworld:

1. Field of Asphodel: no mans land (people awaiting judgement

 

2. Elysian Fields: perople who were great and never angered the Gods

 

3. Tartarus: people who angered the Gods. Furies live in this part (the deepest part of the Underworld)

Ruler of: Goddess of Agriculture/ Seasons

 

Key Events: Hades kidnaps Persephone and takes her to the Underworld. Demeter goes to Zeus for help but Zeus doesn't want to. Demeter causes a drought.

*Persephone eats a pomegranate and can't leave the underworld

 

Explains: where the seasons came from: 6 months in underworld represent (fall/ winter) 6 months on Earth (spring/ summer)

Ruler of: Goddess of the hunt/ moon

 

Twin to Apollo

Zeus gives her a silver bow & arrow. She wants to remain pure of men and decides she is going to hunt unjust men. She makes Nymphs promise to remain "pure". Callisto breaks the promise and Artemis turns her into a bear.

 

Zeus comes to Callisto rescue and turns her into a constellation (stars) in the sky

Events:  Apollo challenges the Marysyas to a competition of Music. He competes with Marysas and Marysas loses because he is unable to sing and play the flute at the same time. Marysas is killed and becomes a river

Ruler: Messenger God

 

Events: Stole cows from Apollo and sacrificed one for the gods. Zeus was interest in Apollo and made him the messenger of the Gods. One of his jobs was to take the dead to the Underworld.

Ruler: Smith god/ Lord of Mechanics

 

Events: He was born ugly and Hera threw him off of Mount Olympus. He broke his legs and sank to the bottom of the ocean. Thetis raised him in her cave and he made beautiful jewels. Hera loved the jewels and brough him back to Mt. Olympus. He worked with the Cyclopses to make fashion tools for the Gods.

Events: She rose from the sea foam and was a beautiful threat. Hera wanted her to marry quickly and everyone wanted to marry her. She married Hephaestus but made it clear she would still visit other men.
