Term
Contiguous Conditioning
Definition
  • learning principles that reflected associationism and believed that a science of human behavior must be based on observable phenomena
  • performance of a behavior in a situation will be repeated when the situation repeats
  • believed responses do no need to be rewarded to be learned
  • rewards may support unlearning (not forgetting)
  • habits are simply behaviors established to many cues
Term
Threshold
Definition
  • Keep stimulus below threshold that will produce unwanted response
  • Ex: length of class but not to a point where students are frustrated
Term
Fatigue
Definition
  • force to make unwanted response repeatedly in presence of simulus
  • Ex: a child who makes paper airplanes in class-->give him a stack of paper and tell him to make them all airplanes
Term
Incompatible Response
Definition
  • When it is impossible for two responses to co-exist simultaneously, we say that they are incompatible responses. For example, your dog can't both sleep on the couch and sleep on his own bed at the same time. Therefore, we say that sleeping in his bed and sleeping on the couch are incompatible responses.

  • Similarly, your dog can't chase your neighbor's cat and ignore your neighbor's cat at the same time. Therefore, those responses also are rightly said to be incompatible.

  • Reinforcing responses that are incompatible with the target response is one of the three elements in the formula for changing behavior.
