Term
What is a transverse plane?
Definition

Cuts through the body through the waist, for example. A horizontal cut. Also known as the axial plane. Views the body in cross-section.

(Note that standard practice is to look up at cross-sections from below!)

Term
What is a coronal plane?
Definition
Cuts the body into anterior and posterior. Imagine cutting down through the head, from ear to ear. Named for the coronal suture.
Term
What is a sagittal plane?
Definition
It divides the body into right and left. Imagine cutting down through the head, right between the eyes, for example.
Term
What are the sections of the spine? How many vertebra in each?
Definition

7 cervical

12 thoracic

5 lumbar

5 sacral (tend to be fused)

3-5 coccygeal (fused)

Term

What region of the spine are these vertebra from? Identify the numbered parts.

Definition

Vertebra are from the Lumbar Spine.

1. Pedicle

2. Spinous process

3. Transverse process

4. Vertebral body

5. Superior articular process

6. Vertebral foramen

7. Mamillary process

8. Intervertebral disk

9. Intervertebral foramen

10. Superior vertebral notch

11. Inferior vertebral notch

12. Accessory process

13. Lamina

14. Inferior articular process

Term
Tell me about some special certival vertebra.
Definition

C1 is known as the Atlas (holds up the world that is your head).

C2 is known as the Axis (let's the world that is your head rotate around.)

Term
How are the vertebra connected to one another?
Definition
Vertebra connect via their superior and inferior articular processes. This allows them to move as joints. Vertebra also have intervertebral disks between them (fibrous soft tissue that allows for flexibility).
Term
Where is an LP typically proformed? Why is it done there? What does the needle pass through?
Definition

A lumbar puncture is performed below L2, often specifically below L4. Here the conus medullaris has ended and only the cauda equina remain.

The goal is to push the need through the supraspinous ligament, the interspinous ligament, the ligamentum flavum and the epidural space to get to the cerebral spinal fluid in the sub-arachnoid space.
