Called Chardonnay because the grapes came from a village called Chardonnay in Burgundy

 

at 400k acres, it is the 2nd most widely planted white grape worldwide

 

It is the number 1 selling varietal in the US

  • FFH: Tropical fruits, bananas, lychee, lemon, lime, mango and pineapple
  • E rarely noticable
  • W: Coconut, dill, vanilla, butterscotch and caramel
  • A: lower in new world Chardonney specifically in California where most chardonney is produced in warmer climate.  Malolactic fermentation is common
