Appropriation

Definition

refers to how we make sense of the meanings encoded into cultural texts, and incorporate these into our daily lives.  It is frequently used by cultural critics to highlight power relations in an unequal society.  Thus, appropriation can refer to the process whereby members of relatively privelegded groups raid the cultural of marginalized groups, abstracting cultural artifacts from their historically specific contexts.  Frewuently this involves co-optation, by which a cultural item's resistant or counterhegemonic potential is lost through its translation into the dominant cultural context.  Adding insult to injury, appropriation frequently means profit for the appropriator.
