Definition
habitat.
Term
What are the levels of organization for this chapter thingy? idk?
Definition
Biosphere, Ecosystem, Community, and Population.
Term
What is the chemical reaction that transfers LIGHT energy into CHEMICAL energy?
Definition
Photosynthesis
Term
What is chemosynthesis and why is it unique?
Definition
It transfers one type of chemical energy into usable chemical energy. It is unique because it does not derive energy from the sun.
Term
What is primary production?
Definition
It just means that autotrophic organisms are the base of energy in all ecosystems.
Term
What are heterotrophs?
Definition
They get their energy from the consumption of other organisms.
Term
What are secondary consumers?
Definition
Carnivores-meat eaters, omnivores-meat and plant eaters, and detritivores-decomposers
Term
Describe the freshwater biome.
Definition
Great lakes, rivers, algae,
Term
Describe the grassland biome.
Definition
Located in middle latitudes, has animal variety, in the interior of continents.
Term
Chaparral-describe it
Definition
Mediterranean climate, mild, various locations, like a savanna
Term
What is symbosis?
Definition
species interaction
Term
What is succession?
Definition
The gradual change in a community over time.
Term
What kind of symbosis is it when:
Oxpeckers feed on ticks found on rhinos
Mistletoes extracts h20 and nutrients from trees
Barnacles make homes for themselves by attactching to whales.
Definition
Mutualism, Parasitism, Commensalism
Term
What are natural resources?
Definition
Anything made by nature and needed by living organisms.
Term
Why must we protect the earths plant and animal species and resources?
Definition
Because not all resources are renewable but all resources are needed by living organisms. Without resources like oil, coal life would be extremely different and if the plant species died out we woeuld lose crops that we need to eat because at the time we only use 20 of the 90% of plant species and we also use plants for medicine. If we don't proctect animals, they more will start to become extinct which will take away food for us and also mess up the food chain.
