Term
Continental drift
Definition
Theory by Alfred Wegener that a supercontinent, Pangaea(all earth) once existed. Pangaea gradually drifted about to their present positions over a course of 200 million years.
Term
Panthalassa
Definition
One huge ocean that surrounded Pangaea. Today, all that remains of this omnipresent body of water is the Pacific Ocean.
Term
Paleomagnetism
Definition
Rocks formed thousand or million of years ago contain a "record" of the direction of the magnetic poles at the time of their formation. Determine direction to the poles and latitude of their origin. Evidence that supported continental drift.
Term
Seafloor spreading
Definition
Oceanic ridges located above zones of convection are upwelling the mantle. Material is moved up laterally spreading across the seafloor as the seafloor is then carried a conveyor belt fashion AWAY FROM THE RIDGE.
