Term
Costal Plain
Definition

Landforms: wide lowland plains fringing on costal zone (New Yrok to Mexico)

Rock Type: sedimentary Strata

Structural Geology: Very gentle dipping strata

Other: Depositional environments migrated across costal plains during higher sea levels: Outer banks

Term
Piedmont
Definition

landforms: Plain to rolling upland area- between Costal Plan and Blue Ridge Mt (to the West)

Rock Type: Highly deformed igneous and metamorphic rocks that have been eroded down. (shows mt. uplift occured and then erosion)

Structural Geology: Folded due to compression from collisinal margin.

Other: rocks extend into costal plain but the sedement that covers costal plane has eroded in the pedomont region.

Term
Blue Ridge Mountains
Definition

Landforms: Elongate mountain range extending from Pennsylvania to Georgia. Occurs between the Peidmont and Vally n Ridge Province.

Rock Type: Metamorphic rocks

Structural Geology: Folds and thrust faults of the same age in Piedmont and Valley and ridge Province.

Other: Deformatin and metamorphism of the BR rocks was part of the same mountail building event as the rocks in the Piedmont. Also the same deforamtionsal event (collisional continents) folded and thrusted sedimentary strata in the westward adjacent valley and ridge.

Sites: smokey Mt's

Term
Valley n Ridge
Definition

Landforms: (landscape): Elongated belt of folded and thrust faulted sedementary strata extending from PA to GA that szig zag ridges and intervening valleys.

Rock Type: Sedimentary strarta- erosionally resistant sandstone ridges & non-resistant shale and limestone in valleys.

Structural Geology: The folds (mostly plunging) and thrust faults are of the same age as folds and thrusts in the Piedmont and BR.

Other: No metamorphism because the rocks were too far away from higher pressure and tem zones in the core of the mountain belt.

Term
Piedmont, BRM, Valley and Ridge
Definition
Since all have the same age and types of folds and thrust faults know they were all formed by the same deformational process (continental collision).
Term
Dendritic
Definition
River flows are controlled by rock geometry. The leaf pattern indicates low relief or flat area ( horizontal and uniform underlying rock).
Term
Erosion
Definition
displacement of material

Depositional Processes
Definition

building up of sedement ocurrs in trelation with weathering/erosion

Term
Appalachian Plateau
Definition

Landforms: located west of the Valley and Ridge, 1000ft elevation.

Dendritic drainage pattern (uniform rock)

Rock Type: Sedimentary strata. lithic rich sandstone

Structural Geology- horizontal strata

Other: resources formed in sediment rocks. Deposited into a foreland basin after tectonic collisional event.

Term
New England Province
Definition

Landforms: mountainous area alongside the northeastern Coast and inland area.

Rock type: igneous and metamorphic rocks: granit batholiths (found in earths interior) minerals are resistant to erosion =mts.

Structural Geology: FOlds and thrust faults due to compression in an ancient mountain belt

Other: Rugged Coastline with river estuaries(sea level rose and filled the vallies). Glaciated (melted) by continetal glacier system. Continental mountain belt with igneous rocks in core.

Term
Interiror Plateaus and Lowlands
Definition

Landfroms: Low elevation 500-100, nearly level plains to rolling hill region in central part of the US. dendritic valleys.

Rock Type: Sedimentary Strata. Quartz arenite sandstone and limestone (Karst Topography).

Other: Covered by continental glacier deposits in northern states

Term
Rocky Mountain
Definition

Landforms: Rugged, high elevation mountain ranges with intervening intermontane basins (collect sediment from ountains)  located west of the great plains from canada to New Mexico.

Rock Type: Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic- folded broken uplifted.

Structural Geology: Abundant folds and thrust faults (compression)

Other: Valley glaciers.

Sedimentary strata deposited in compression foreland basins.

Higher elevation than other US mountains because the continental coollision is younger than other mts.

Term
Cascade-Sierra Nevada Mountains
Definition

Landforms: Semi continuous north south chain.

Cascades (Northern Cali to WA): andesitic, composite volcanoes.

Sierra Nevadas: (eastern CA) granite batholiths.

 Structural Geology:NP

Other: Continental Magmatic arc: igneous Cascades are still explosive

Term
Pacific Coastal Range
Definition

Landform: Structurally complex, steep young mountain ranges along pacific coastal zone

Rock types: all rock types

COmplex structural geo.

Youngest mountains in 48 states, deformation is a result of tectonic collision and strike-slip tectonics along a plate margine.
