This also helped saved money on shipping goods. Because of the Erie Canal there is now a larger development of people in upstate NY (Rochester went from 1500-36000 people and Buffalo went from 2000-42000 people from 1820-50)

Labor? = because tobacco is one of the most labor intensive crops (over 500 hours for every 1 acre of crop!). Indentured slaves worked to produce tobacco.
