Term
2 Types of Currents
Definition
Surface: Wind direction determines way currents will go.
Deep Water: Temperatures- cold & saline.
Term
2 Current temperatures
Definition
Warm: Ex. Florida current, few nutrients, blue water, very few fish(except near coral reef)
Cold: Ex. California, green water, many organisms in water, lots of fish, water still cold in summer.
-lots of oxygen
-rich in nutriants(remains of dead thing
-Most productive(large types of fish)
-Upwelling(deep water brought to top many nutrients/plankton)
Term
What are plankton
Definition
-Come from greek "planktos" = wanderer
-phytoplankton- Small plants(size of fingernail), algae or diatom
-Zooplankton- Animal(tiny animals that float in water)
-PROVIDE BASE OF FOOD CHAIN!
Term
Importance of Kelp
Definition
-Over 1,000 species rely on kelp
- only occurs where there is a hard substrate(can't attach to sand)
-kelp forests, kelp beds: California has some of most extensive forests in world.
-One of fastst growing plants in world, harvested(used in ice cream)
Term
Importance of sea otters
Definition
-Eat sea urchins which graze on algae & kelp.
-Turn of century, all otters extinc from CA; killed for fur. Lead to explosion of urchins, ate all the kelp which caused fisheries to crash.
-1930- Sea otter reappears so does kelp.
Term
Salmon population in CA
Definition
-Used to be in LA river
-Dam problem: Salmon can't return to original fresh water habitats to lay eggs, salmon ladders allow salmon to get up dam but then baby salmon get sucked in to generators on way back down.
-Creates warmer water, uncomfortable for salmon.
Term
Fish location and history, EEZ & Bush doctrine
Definition
-40% of world population live 100km(60mi) from the coast.
-Colonial period: whaling(huge industry), pushed whals to extinction.
-Today(Global): International fishing fleets; after WWII overfished so much that many species disappeared.
-Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ): 200 miles of economic fishing off shore.
-GWBUSH: Established Northwestern Hawaiian National Monument- 84 billion acres of protection for 1000's of specie
-Huge reserve to prevent fishing!
Term
Fishing Methods: Hook/line, long line
Definition
-Hook & Line: Individuals w/ poles; can catch almost anything, minimal impact.
-Long Lining: Boat w/ long line(1km), w/ baiting for select species(Swordfish/tuna); Impact good to select desired fish(little bycatch), but bad due to overfishing.
-Purse-seine nets: 2 boats look like they're piggy backing, smaller boat sent off where sonar finds most fish, circle fish area with nets, pull everything in(Salmon/tuna), HUGE BYCATCH- dolphins, turtles, etc)
-Bottom Trawling: Boat w/ big net swept across bottom of ocean, scrape up everything in path(flounder, shrimp, cod); Impact: bycatch(random, no selectivity in netting; 1 to 5 ratio of by catch to desired.)has TED- turtle exlusion device sized for turtles to open door for them to swim out.
-Baited Pods: Pots on back of boat, thrown into water to come back for later(lobster, crab); Impact is good for selecting species.
-Fish Farming(aquaculture): Very common in temperate regions. Big pens out in water, eggs hatched & feed.(Salmon/shrimp); Impact: cut down mangroves for shrimp farms, salmon add nutrients to water not natural.
Term

GPS use for biodiversity survey
Definition
-Transmitters placed on animals to track migration. Ex. hawks disappearing, traced them where they died, found out area where they died was from farmer's area that's sprayed w/ deadly fertilizers.
-Ocean animals: Turtles, manatees: finds where many gather and tells boaters to slow down to ensure safety.
