1) ~てくれる/あげる/もらう

~てあげる is used when someone does something for the sake of others, as a favor; ~てくれる is used when someone does something for you as a favor; ~てもらう is used when you get someone, or persuade them, to do something for you

Definition

私は妹にお金をかしてあげました

I (generously) lent my sister money (to help her out).

友達が宿題をてつだってくれます

A friend helps me with my homework (for which I am grateful).

私は友達に宿題をてつだってもらいました

I got a friend of mine to help me with my homework.

2) ~ていただけませんか

This is used to make a polite request. It is more polite to use toward a nonpeer or stranger than 下さい.

Definition

~て いたたけませんか

~て くれませんか

~て くれない?

 

ちょっとてつだっていただけませんか。

Would you lend me a hand?

ちょっと待ってくれませんか。

Will you wait for a second?

それ取ってくれない?

Pass that to me, will you?

3) ~といい

 When you hope that something nice will happen to someone.

Definition

(short, present) と いいですね/いいね。

I hope... (for you/them)

(short, present) と いいんですが/いいんだけど。

I hope... (for myself)


いいアルバイトが見つかるといいですね。

I hope you find a good part-time job.

試験がやさしいといいんですが。

I am hoping that the exam is easy.

4) ~時

It is used to describe when something happens or has happened.

Definition

チベットに行く時、ビザを取ります。

I will get the visa issued when I got to Tibet.

チベットに行く時、ビザを取りました。

I had the visa issued when I was going to Tibet.

寝る時、コンタクトを取ります。

I take out the contact lenses when I go to sleep.

出かける時、ドアにかぎをかけました。

I locked the door when I went out.

さびしい時、友達二電話します。

I call up friends when I am lonely.

5) ~てすみませんでした

It is used to describe the things you have done that you want to apologize for.

Definition

汚い言葉を使って、すみませんでした。

I am sorry for using foul language.

デートのやくそくを忘れて、ごめん。

Sorry that I stood you up.

宿題を持って来なくて、すみませんでした。

I am sorry for not bringing in the homework.

もっと早く言わなくて、ごめん。

Sorry that I did not tell you earlier.
