Term
Foot Slap
Definition
forceful contact of the forefoot after heel strike due to DF weakness
Term
Steppage Gait
Definition
excessive hip or knee flexion seen in the swing phase due to DF weakness
- clearance gait
Term
Calcaneous Gait
Definition
at push off, the heel does not come up due to weakness of the gastroc/soleus
-"Flat Foot Gait"
Term
Toe Walking
Definition
pt keeps heels off the ground with a tiptoes posture due to either PF contracture or hypersensitive tactile sensation
-think of Dexter's pt. playing "Fairy"
Term
Quadriceps Gait
Definition
knee is thrown into extension at heel strike to minimize quadriceps activity
- will see an abbreviated stance phase
- imagine a person walking in a full leg cast
Term
Vaulting Gait
Definition
rising up on the toes during stance so that the opposite foot can clear the ground
Term
Gluteus Medius Lurch
Definition
excessive lateral trunk side flexion over the stance leg due to weak hip abductors
Term
Trendelenburg Gait
Definition
pelvis drops on the unaffected side during stance due to weak gluteus medius & hip abductors
Term
Duck Waddle Gait
Definition
Bilateral Trendelenburg Gait due to weakness in gluteus medius & hip abductors
Term
Hip Hiking
Definition
quadratus lumborum elevates the limb on the swing leg side in order to shorten the leg so it can clear the ground
-seen with fused knee
Term
Backward Trunk Lurching
Definition
in order to maintain upright posture, the hip is thrown posterior at heel strike due to weak gluteus maximus & hip extensors
-"Hanging on Your Ligaments"
Term
Scissors Gait
Definition
femurs are excessively adducted due to spasticity of the hip adductors
Term
Circumduction
Definition
swinging of the leg in a half arc around the body during swing phase
- clearance gait
Term
Parkinson's Gait
Definition
increased shuffling cadence, decreased stride & arm swing
- neck, trunk & knees are flexed
- these people have problems stopping
Term
Antalgic Gait
Definition
avoidance of weight bearing on the affected side
- decreased stance phase
-"Limp Gait"
Term
Ataxic Gait
Definition
incoordination and loss of smooth motion are compensated by a wide base gait, unsteady & tremor during movement
- seen after TBI
- "Walking on Ice"
Term
Clawed Toe
Definition
decreased push off and loss of gait velocity due to flexed toes
- due to contracture of toe flexors or compensation for poor balance
Term
Hemiplegic Gait
Definition
pt swings paraplegic leg outward & ahead in a circle or pushes it ahead; affected upper limb is carried across the trunk for balance
- see in stroke pts
Term
Short Leg Gait
Definition
one leg is shorter than the other due to a bone growth deformity & there is a lateral shift to the affected side along w/ a downward tilt of the pelvis on the affected side
- might also attempt to supinate shorter leg's foot
Term
Psoatic LImp
Definition
pt has difficulty in swing through & limp may be accompanied by exaggerated trunk & pelvis motion
-psoas major muscle involvement
-seen in conditions affecting hips
