• Captain Samuel Nicholas became the commader of the two battalions and was considered the first Commandant of the Marine corps.

1776

1868

• Marine Corps adopted the EGA (eagle, globe, and anchor)
• Brigadier General Jacob Zeilin, the 7th Commandant, modified the British (Royal) Marine emblem to depict the Marines as both American and maritime.
• The globe and anchor signify worldwide service and sea traditions and the spread eagle is a symbol of the Nation itself.

1883

• "Semper Fidelis," (Latin for "Always Faithful") was adopted as the Marine corps official motto
• The Phrase is more commonly herd as its abbreviation "Semper Fi"

1900

• Marines from ships o the Asiatic station defended the American Legation in Peking, China during the Boxer Rebellion.
• The Marines were part of a multinational defense force that protected the Legation Quarter against attack.

1913

• The Marine Corps Established its aviation unit. 
• Marine Major Alfres A. Cunningham was the first pilot.

1917

• Marines landed in France as part of the American force
• Marines participated in eight distinct operations and were awarded a number of decorations
• one being the French Fourragere that is still worn by members of the 5th and 6th Marines.

1933

• The Marines were reorganized into the Fleet Marine Force
• The Marin corps Equipment Board was established at Quantico, Virginia where Marines devoted long hours to testing and developing materials for landing operations and expeditionary service

1965

• Marines Landed in South Vietnam, which became the longest war in Marine Corps history
• Marines conducted numerous large-scale offensive operations including a Pacification program designed to win the support of the local populace.
• Marines landed in the Dominican Republic to evacuate and protect U.S. citizens

1982

• Marines Deployed to Lebanon as part of a multinational peacekeeping force
• This action further display the Marine concept of a "Force in Readiness"
• 23 Oct 1983, a suicide truck bomb attack on the headquarters building killed 241 Americans and wounded 70 others, the last Marine unit withdrew in July 1984

1991

• Operation Desert Storm was launched after the Iraqi qovernment refused to comply with U.N. resolutions.
• Marine aviation was heavily used in the air phase in Jan 1991 and then marine ground forces swept into Kuwait and liberated the country

2001

• September 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City and washington, D.C., soon after Marine units deployed to the Arabian Sea
• Nov 2001, Marines set up a forward operating command in southern Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom
• This marked the beginning of the War on Terror
• 25 Nov, The 15th MEU arrived in Afghanistan, becoming the first U.S. ground troops in the region
• The 15th MEU then set up "camp Rhino," at the airport south of Kandahar, The last political and military stronghold of the Taliban Regime
• Mission code-named "Swift Freedom" sealed off the City, cutting off supplies and escape routes, and with in months the Al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorist governments were over thrown and 25 milion Afghans were able to experience their first freedom in over 20 years.

2003

• On 19 March 2003, Operation Iraqi Freedom was launched and in three weeks demolished the government of Saddam Hussein and his Baath political party.
