Term
Body fluids basics
Definition
- Men have 60%
- Women have 50%
- Fat contains little water
- % of body weight that is water decreases with age
Term
Intake = Output
Definition
Intake 2500 ml/24hrs
Output 2300 - 2600 ml/24 hrs

Insensible losses = lungs, skin, stool
Term
Intracellular Fluids (ICF)
Definition
¾ of body fluids is located inside the cells.
ICF – essential for normal cell function, medium for metabolic process
Term
Extracellular fluids (ECF)
Definition
- ¼ of the ECF is plasma or intravascular fluid
- ¾ of the ECF is interstitual fluid found in the lymph system and between the cells (interstitial space and transcellular)
- ECF – supplies food, oxygen, and water, vitamins and electrolytes and takes away body waste
Term
Fluid Spacing
Definition
- First Spacing – a normal amount of fluid in both the extracellular and intracellular compartments
- Second Spacing – an excess accumulation of interstitial fluid (edema) – around cells
- Third Spacing – fluid accumulation in areas that normally have no fluid or a minimal amount of fluids (ascites, edema with burns, massive bleeding into a joint)/not available to body, must be pulled out
Term
Solutes
Definition
A. non electrolytes
B. electrolytes
Term
Electrolytes
Definition
Electrolytes are compounds that do separate into charged particles called ions
A. Cations – positively charged-Na, K, calcium, magnesium
B. Anions – negatively charged-CL, Bicarb
