Term
Fluency
Definition
It is more than just automatic word recognition; it requires the ability to read with proper phrasing, intonation and stress.
Term
The nonaccurate stage
Definition
At the beginning, students have considerable difficulty in recognizing words, do so only with considerable time and effort, and are not always accurate.
Term
The accuracy stage
Definition
At this stage, students are able to recognize words accurately, but doing so requires a good deal of attention, effort, and time.
Term
The automatic stage
Definition
Students are able to recognize words accurately and instantaneously, and doing so does not require much attention, effort, or time.
Term
Simultaneous repeated reading
Definition
The teacher or other competent reader and the student repeatedly read the passage together.
Term
Echo reading
Definition
The student reads after the teacher, repeating what the teacher read.
Term
Tape-Assisted Repeated Reading
Definition
Tape short books that students repeatedly listened to over a period of a week while also repeatedly reading them and comparing their reading to the tape.
Term
Partner Reading
Definition
More capable readers pair up with less capable peers and take turns reading to each other, with the stronger partner reading each passage first and the less strong reader following.
Term
Choral Reading
Definition
The teacher chooses a selection that will lend itself particularly well to oral reading—perhaps a humorous poem from Jack Prelutsky’s It’s Raining Pigs and Noodles— and explains the importance of reading the passage smoothly, with expression, at a good rate, and accurately. Next he reads a passage aloud as a model and then has students read it aloud in unison several times.
Term
Readers Theater
Definition
Refers to the well-rehearsed reading of scripts, with feeling and expression, in front of an audience (usually the class), but without the memorizing of lines, costumes, prompts, scenery, make-up, and other time-consuming and sometimes expensive features of a full-blown play performance
Term
Radio Reading
Definition
The students are motivated to practice the passage by assuming the role of professional announcers preparing to read the passage to a national audience, and it is fun to add in an announcer’s desk and a microphone.
Term
Fluency-Oriented Reading Instruction
Definition
Fluency-oriented reading instruction (FORI) is a whole-class program designed to build oral reading fluency.
