Name: Last Judgement Page from the Book of The Dead of Hunefer

c. 1275 B.C.E., 19th Dynasty

This is his book that he owned for his afterlife. The detail that is shown in the page gives the idea that death is a very important time and that it should be honored and it is very special to them. Egyptians believed that when you were in the afterlife you had to measure your heart, in order to proceed, your heart must weigh no more or no less than a feather. Egyptians had a set and orderly way of life.

Function: Depict a warrior with spartans ideal of body, possibly for a temple of Athena

Context: Originally found in athletic training facility in Pompeii, but is now in a museum in Naples

known for 'contraposto,' 'symmetria,' and chiastic relationship between body parts

Iconic symbol of Imperial Rome

- used for gladiatorial contents and public spectacles like executions and re-enactments

- It was later used for housing, quarters for a religious order, and a fortress

Name: Golden Haggadah
- Moses led the Jews out of slavery in Egypt with a series of miraculous events
- The word "Haggadah" actually means "narration" in Hebrew
- The reason it's called "Golden" Haggadah is because each small painting is decorated with a bright gold-leaf background
- Contains 56 small paintings (miniatures) inside of the manuscript

- The city of Edirne was chosen because of its historical and geographic significance

- Collodion method introduced in 1851 (involved fixing a substance known as gun cotton onto a glass plate, allowing for an even shorter exposure time, like 3-5 minutes, as well as a clearer image)
- Photographers had to carry portable darkrooms to develop image immediately after exposure

Name: Memorial Sheet of Karl Liebknecht, Käthe Kollwitz
1919-1920, Woodcut heightened with white and black ink
- many artists turned to making prints instead of paintings after the First World War
- response to the assassination of Communist leader Karl Liebknecht during an uprising in 1919
- Kollowitz was not a Communist, but she heard Liebknecht speak and admired his charisma, so when the family asked her to create a work to memorialize him she agreed
