Term
James Joyce
Definition
author of “Araby” born in Dublin, Ireland
Term
Araby
Definition
cultural bazaar of Turkish goods; an aesthetic treatment of a puppy love story; The bazaar should be exciting for the boy, considering the dullness of Dublin, but it turns out to be a dark, corrupt place. This corresponds to the boy’s initial lust over Mangan’s sister, which he later realized was foolish.
Term
Blind
Definition
N. Richmond street was “blind” indicating that there is a dead-end in the street. The boy’s love is not going anywhere. “Love is blind” idea is hinted at early on in the novel.
Term
Priest
Definition
the priest died in the drawing room; the boy will create a “new religion” and practically worship Mangen’s sister [the priest also has sexual stories -- allusions that involve romance]
Term
Wild Garden
Definition
located behind the house, this is a reference to the Garden of Eden and the forbidden fruit. The narrator wants what he cannot have. The Garden of Eden also represents the death of innocence.
Term
Mangan's Sister
Definition
the sister of the narrator’s best friend Mangan; she is 18 and Catholic. The narrator falls in love with her from afar and goes to Araby for her. She becomes a holy figure, shown by the recurring motif of backlighting. She is the light in the narrator’s dark, gloomy Dublin setting.
Term
Mrs. Mercer
Definition
she is identified as “an old garrulous woman, a pawnbroker’s widow…”  She eats dinner with the protagonist and his aunt while waiting for his uncle to return home. At dinner, the protaganist listens to her gossip.  She serves as a roadblock by stretching out time (like anticipation) while the protagonist is waiting for his father.
Term
"I could interpret these signs"
Definition
the protagonist is responding to his uncle’s drunken state when he (his uncle) returns home.  Importance- a way of the protagonist saying that he can interpret, just like the reader, the many clues open to interpretation in this story.
Term
Uncle
Definition
who the narrator had to wait for, before leaving to the bazaar. He serves as a barrier of the narrator getting to Araby, which makes the narrator late, which leads to the epiphany.
Term
"driven and derived by vanity"
Definition
the protaganist’s response to having Araby (the bazaar) close before he had a chance to buy something for Mangan’s sister.  This means that the protagonist was being teased by himself for his ignorance (failure to realize that he had no chance with Mangan’s sister).  He witnessed a conversation between two people flirting, and realized that communication was essential in a relationship (and his relationship had none). The narrator has an epiphany when he realizes the arrogance that led him to believe that he had a chance with Mangan’s sister.
Term
Puppy Love
Definition
the relationship between the protagonist and Mangan’s sister. Their “relationship” is really just a built up imagination in the protaganist’s head.  He has an epiphany and realizes his false hopes.
Term
Philistine
Definition
a person concerned about materialistic things.  This refers to the protagonist, who tries to impress Mangan’s sister by buying her something, rather than simply talking to her.
