Term
Leaning Tower of Pisa Experiment
Definition

Experiment: Dropping objects of various weights from the top of the tower.

Result: Except for small effect of air resistance; objects of various weights fell at the same time and hit the ground at the same time.

Conclusion: Weight does not have any effect on falling objects.

Term
Inclined Plane Experiment 1
Definition

Hypothesis: If there isn't any interference with a moving object, it will keep moving in a straight line forever.

Experiment: If the slope is level, does the speed change?

Result: Slope up, the speed decreases. Slope down, the speed increases.

Conclusion: Level slop, the ball will not speed up or slow down, unless friction acted on the ball.

Term
Inclined Plane Experiment 2
Definition

Experiment: Rolling balls on facing inclined planes.

Result: The height on the other side was about the initial height it started from.

Conclusion: The less steep the slope, the further the ball will go, but it will maintain it's original height.

Term
Inertia
Definition

Is a property of an object to resist changes in its motion.

Mass is a measure of inertia.

Term
Isaac Newton
Definition
  • Discovered three laws of motion.
  • Discovered law of gravity.
  • Discoveries in optics.
Term
First Law Of Motion
Definition

Every object in a state of motion, tends to stay in motion, unless acted upon by an outside force. An object at rest tends to stay at rest.

Law of Inertia

Term
Force is...
Definition

1) a push

2) a pull

Term
Examples of forces
Definition
  • Weight
  • Support force
  • Tension
  • Friction
Term
Weight
Definition
The same as the gravitational force acting on an object.
Term
Support force
Definition
The force that a surface exerts on an object resting on it.
Term
Tension
Definition
The force in a rope or a string when something hangs from the rope or string, streches it.
Term
Friction
Definition
The force between two surfaces that opposes motion.
Term
Vector quantity
Definition
Has both a magnitide (size) and direction.
Term
Examples of vector quantities:
Definition
Q-force, velocity and acceleration.
Term
Units of force:
Definition
  • SI system
  • Customary
Term
SI System:
Definition
(N) Newton is approximately 1/4 of a pound
Term
Customary:
Definition
Pound
Term
Net force
Definition

1) Is the total force.

2) The total takes into account both magnitude and direction.

Term
Examples of inertia
Definition

1) Car trying to turn a corner on slippery ice.

2) Flipping a coin while on a high-speed jet moving with a constant velocity.

3) Planets' motion if the sun's gravity turned off.

Term
If the net force is zero, an object's motion or non-motion will
Definition
make a new path, tangent to new path.
Term
Mechanical equilibrium
Definition
Is an application of Newton's first law of motion.
Term
Mechanical equilibrium occurs when...
Definition
the net force acting on an object is zero.
Term
Mechanical equilibrium, mathmatically stated:
Definition
ΣF=0
Term
Remember! With mechanical equilibrium:
Definition
when the net force equals zero, the object's motion remains constant in both.
