Term

Factors to consider when choosing a language test to administer:

Definition

1.    Do you want to use a standardized test?

2.    Do you want a screening test or a diagnostic test?

3.    Is the child within the test’s age norms?  If so…Where does the child fall within

those age norms (on the high end, the low end?)

4.    Is the content of the test appropriate?

  • Are there obvious biases in content or norming population?
  • Does the content reflect current evidence supported practice?
  • Will this test provide you with information you’re looking for with respect to content and scores provided?
  • Will you learn information that will help determine a diagnosis and help you and the client/family set functional goals?

5.    How is the stimuli presented?  (auditorily only, verbally, in writing, through

pictures?) sensory modality used to present info

6.    What is the response mode? (Does it require verbal responses, written responses, pointing?)

7.    How long does it take to administer?

8.    Has the child taken this test recently?
