Term
Elements of Egress System
Definition

1. Exit Access

2. Exit

3. Exit Discharge

Term
Public Way
Definition
A street, alley or similar parcel of land where an means of egress opens out to. The public way must have a minimum height and width or 10 feet.
Term
Horizontal Exits
Definition

1. A means of egress from one buidling to an area of refuge in another building on approximately the same level.

2. A means of egress through a fire barrier or firewall to an area of refuge at approximately the same level in the same building that provides protection from smoke and fire.

3. May be substituted for other exits if they do not compose more than 50% of the total exit capacity.

Term
Firewalls/Fire barriers
Definition

Must have 2 hour rated fire resistance.

Doors penetrating these walls must have 1 1/2 hour fire resistance. These doors must swing in the area of travel (necessitating double doors on both sides of the wall is used as a means of egress).

Term
Smokeproof enclosures
Definition

Stairways or stair enclosures that are designed to limit the prenetration of smoke, heat, and toxic gases. Access is made through a vestibule or outside balcony.

- may incorporate pressurization or natural ventilation.

Term
Dimensions of doors openning to a means of egress.
Definition
these doors may not obstruct more than one half of the required exit width
Term
Panic Hardware
Definition

type of door latching assembly incorporating a device that releases the latch upon application of force in the direction of egress travel.

Uses force not greater than 15 pounds to release the door latch.

Door must be able to be set in motion with not greater than 30 pounds.

Term
Exit Stairs
Definition

1. Must be 44 inches wide (unless occupant load is <50 in which case 36 inches wide is acceptable).

2. Landings must be no greater than 12 feet high.

3. Handrails are required on both sides of the stairs.

4. Enclosure for exit stairs must have 1 hour rated fire resistance.

Term
Ramps
Definition

1. Must be at least 44 inches wide.

2. Maximum slope of 1-12 rise for every 12 feet.

3. Maximum length of 30 feet.

-if enclosed must have same degree of fire resistance as exit stairs.

Term
Emergency lighting systems
Definition
must provide at least 1 foot candle for 90 minutes when normal power for lighting is interupted.
Term
Exit Signage
Definition

Illuminated exit signs must be within 100 feet of exit access.

Letters must be 6 inches high and principal strokes at least 3/4 of an inch wide.

-these signs must have battery back up or wired in to auxillary power supply.

Term
Floor Proximity Signage
Definition

1. Used in addition to ceiling level signs.

2. Must be between 6-8 inches of the floor surface.

Term
Occupant Load Equation
Definition
Occupant Load = Net Floor Area/Area per Person (factor)
Term
Exit capacity
Definition
Calculate the capacity of the exit access, the exit, and the exit discharge. The element that has the smallest capacity will determine the total capacity for the entire means of egress.
Term
Exit locations
Definition
When more than one exit is required, the one-half diagonal ruloe applies. This means they are to be located not less than one half the overall diagonal dimension of the room or building area, as measured from the edge of the exit or exit access.
Term
Dead-end Corridor
Definition
A corridor with no outlet to a means of egress and is greater than 20 feet in length.
Term
Stationary Fire Pumps
Definition

1. Horizontal split-case pump (most common).

2. Vertical split-case pump.

3. Vertical inline pump.

4. Vertical turbine pump.

5. End suction pump.

Term
Dry chemical agents
Definition

1. Sodium bicarbonate (ordinary dry chemical).

-class b and c fires.

2. Potassium bicarbonate (aka Purple K).

-class b and c fires.

3. Monoammonium Phosphate.

-class a,b and c fires.

Term

Class D Agents

(dry powder)

Definition

1.NA-X (sodium bicarbonate based)

-used on sodium, potassium, and sodium-potassium alloy fires.

2. MET-L-X (sodium chloride based)

-used on magnesium, sodium, and potassium fire.

3. LITH-X (graphite based)

-designed for lithium fires, but can be used on magnesium, zirconium, and sodium fires.

NA-X and MET-L-X form a crust over the burning metal.

LITH-X works by conducting heat away from the fuel after a layer has been applied.

Term
Fire Extinguisher Mounting
Definition

Weight of < 40lbs, top of fire extinguisher is not more than 5 feet above the floor.

Weight > 40lbs, top of fire extinguisher is not more than 3 1/2 feet above the floor.

The clearance from the floor to the bottom of any fire extiinguisher should never be <4 inches.

Term
Pull Station Mounting and Placement
Definition

-between 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 feet above the floor.

- placd within 5 feet of every exit.

Term
Quenching Operations
Definition

-heated quenching operations, temperature range from 200-400 degrees F. Quenching oil flash point of 500 degrees F.

-unheated quenching operations, temperatures range from 100-200 degrees F. Quenching oil flash point of 300 degrees F.

-quenching oil should not come within 50 degrees F of flashpoint.

Should be housed separately in 1 hour rated fire resistive buildings, away from main production.

-tanks to be located at grade level, with enough freeboard to keep tank from overflowing. Freedboard should never be less than 6 inches.

-tanks should have drains to protect from overflow, esp. those that contain 150 gallons of oil or more.

-any tank >500 gallons should have bottom drain that opens automatically in the event of a fire.

-dikes should be in place around tank and drains should be piped into a specialized holding tank.

Term
Asphalt and Tar Kettles
Definition

Kettle must be operated by one employee who is knowledgeable of the operation being conducted.

-employee must be within reasonable distance and within sight

-must have a tight fitting lid

-1 portable 40-B:C extinguisher with 25 feet of the kettle

-if used for roofing, an addition 3-A:40-B:C extinguisher must be available

-must have an approved, functional, and visible temperature gauge.

Term
Fire Lane Specifications
Definition

-must extend to within 150 feet of all portions of a building.

-minimum width of 16 feet, 20 feet adjacent to buildings for one way travel, and 24 feet for two way travel.

-width determined to pass apparatus with outriggers deployed.

Vertical clearance must be a minimum of 13.5 feet.

must employ an angle of 8 degrees to allow apparatus to drive on to the lane without striking the ground with fromt or rear bumpers.

Term
