Term

ENERGY

When do two objects repel eachother? When do they attract?

Definition
They repel eachother when they have the same charges. They attract when they have opposite charges.
Term

ELECTRICITY

Explain the three ways an object can become statically charged.

Definition

- Friction

- Charging by conduction

- Charging by induction

Term

ELECTRICITY

Whay type of material is a good conductor? Whats a good insulator?

Definition

Good Conductors:

- Copper

- Silver

Good Insulators:

-Plastic

-Wood

Term

ATOMS

An object with equal amount of protons and electrons has a ____________ charge.

Definition
Neutral
Term

ELECTRICITY

Know the parts of a circuit.

Definition
Battery/ dry celll, switch, lightbulb, resistor and wires.
Term

ELECTRICITY
Compare and contrast between series and parallel circuits.

Definition
A series circuit has an equal flow of electrons throughout the circuit. A parallel circuit has a current that is evenly distributed throughout the circuit. They need a bulb, switch, and energy source.
Term
ELECTRICITY
Explain what happens to appliances if one burns out in a series or in a parallel circuit.
Definition
In a series circuit all of the appliances would burn out. In a parallel circuit only that one would burn out and all of the others would stay the same.
Term

ELECTRICITY

What are the names of the terminals on a battery?

Definition
Positive and Negitive
Term
ELECTRICITY
Cuurent is the rate at with charges move through a __________.
Definition
Circuit
Term

ELECTRICITY

Whether or not charges will move in a material depends partly on how tightly _______ are held in the atoms of the materials.

Definition
Term

ELECTRICITY

Understand Ohm's Law

Definition
R=V/I
Term

EARTH

Who is Wegener and why is he important to plate techtonics?

Definition
Wegener proposed the idea of Pangea. He is important to plate techtonics because his theory showed that the continents may have drifted away from eachother due to the continental plates.
Term

EARTH

What is Pangea?

Definition
Pangea is a theory that all of the continents may have been connected at one point and was one super continent.
Term

EARTH

What is the theory of continental drift and give the evidences of this theory?

Definition
This is a theory that all of the continents are slowly moving away from eachother. The evidences are Pangea and some animal and plant fossils are found on different continents that are separated thousands of miles away through water.
Term

EARTH

What are magnetic stripes and how do they change over time?

Definition
Molten material rises and erupts at the same time older rock on the ocean floor moves outward on both sides of the ridge. As material cools it forms a strip of solid rock in the center of the ridge. As time goes on the new molten rock pushes the old rocks further away from the ridge.
Term

EARTH

What are the layers of the Earth? How much volume does each layer make up?

Definition

Inner Core-

0-100 km

Outer Core-

100-2,900 km

Mantle-

2,900-5,100 km

Crust-

5,100-6,378 km

Term

EARTH

Where is the continental crust the thickest on Earth? Where is it the thinnest?

Definition
Continental crust is thickest on mountain ranges (Mount Everest) it is thinnest in rift zones.
Term

EARTH

Compare and contrast oceanic and continental crust. Think density and thickness.

Definition

Oceanic crust:

Water

Covers the majority of the Earth

Less dense

Ocean ridges

Both

Cover the Earth

Contain living organisms

Part of the crust

Continental crust:

Dry land

Volcanoes

More dense

Term

EARTH

Give the features and sizes of the layers of the Earth: Inner, Outer Core, Mantle and Crust.

Definition
Inner Core: Center of the Earth. Mostly made of iron and nickle.
