In a cruciform church, the whole arm is set at right angles to the nave. It appears infrequently in Early Christian chruches.  St. Peters is one of the few examples of a basilica with a transept from this period. It would not become a standard component of the Christian church until the Carolingian Period.

a recess, sometimes rectangur but usually semicircular, in the wall at the end of Roman basilica or Christian churches. In a Roman basilica it frenquently contained an image of the emperor and was where the magistrate dispensed laws. In early Christian churches, it contained a "cathedra" or throne   of the bishop and the altar.

term which refers to the division of the nave wall into various levels. In the Early Christian basilica this usually was composed of a nave colonnade ot arcade and clerestory.
