Term
Three Symbiotic Relationships
Definition
mutualism, parasitism, commensalism
Term
Example of Parasitism
Definition
Dog and Tick, Misteltoe and Tree
Term
Example of Commensalism
Definition
Orchid on Tree
Term
Example of Mutualism
Definition
Clownfish and Sea Anemone (finding Nemo)
Term
Commensalism
Definition
Symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits but doesnt help nor harm the other organism.
Term
Mutualism
Definition
Symbiotic relationship where both species benefit from the relatioship.
Term
Parasitism
Definition
Symbiotic relatioship where one species harms the other species
Term
Why do certain organisms live near the equator rather than the poles?
Definition
Some species are more adapted to the climate by the equator and can survive and reproduce. Another species is more adapted to the poles, and can survive at the poles and reproduce. Darwin's theory of evolution.
Term
How is it possible to find fossils of the same organisms on different continents?
Definition
There was once a supercontinent called Pangaea. Wegener's Theory of Continental Drift explains that the continents were once together, and slowly broke apart. Fossils were buried in rock layers, and separated.
Term
Define Biotic Factor
Definition
Living organisms, or once living in an environment.
Term
Define abiotic factors
Definition
Nonliving factors, air, temperature, water, soil, rocks.
Term
How do abiotic and biotic factors interact with each other in an ecosystem?
Definition
Biotic factors use abiotic factors to survive, such as water, shelter, and temperature. Organisms need to be adapted to their environment's abiotic factors.
Term
Absolute Age uses
Definition
Radiometric dating, half lifes, carbon dating to find a more exact age for rock layers.
Term
Relative age uses
Definition
Law of Superposition, youngest is on top and older layers are on the bottom. Unconformities break through the layers.
Term
Food Web
Definition
Shows how organisms are interconnected in many ways to get energy and food supplies.
Term
Food Chain
Definition
follow one path of energy as they find food
Term
Energy Pyramid
Definition
Producers are on the bottom trophic level, primary consumers above, secondary consumers, and finally tertiary consumers. Energy passed on decreases as move up the Energy Pyramid
Term
Homozygous genes
Definition
The alleles are the same Example BB or bb (Captial means pure dominant and lower case is pure recessive)
Term
Heterozygous
Definition
two alleles for a gene are different (Bb)
Term
Phenotype
Definition
The expression of the genotype (what you see)
