Term
Diegesis
Definition

diegesis [dy‐ĕ‐jee‐sis], an analytic term used in modern narratology to designate the narrated events or story (French, histoire) as a ‘level’ distinct from that of the narration. The diegetic level of a narrative is that of the main story, whereas the ‘higher’ level at which the story is told is extradiegetic (i.e. standing outside the sphere of the main story). An embedded tale‐within‐the‐tale constitutes a lower level known as hypodiegetic. In an older sense outlined in Aristotle's Poetics, diegesis is the reporting or narration of events, contrasted with mimesis, which is the imitative representation of them: so a character in a play who performs a certain action is engaged in mimesis, but if she recounts some earlier action, she is practising diegesis. The distinct is often cast as that between ‘showing’ and ‘telling’.
