o Romantic ideal of the artists.
• Though film is produced collectively, it’s most valuable when it’s essentially the product of the director.
• When the director is a real auteur, film is expression of his or her personality
• Mark of auteur can be traced through thematic and stylistic consistencies within all or most of director’s films

A shift in film criticism. No longer just looks at theme. Focus on analysis. Looking at a lot of films.

Re-evaluation of American films that had previously been dismissed because of genre or low budget.
This brings back genres, helps form canon.
