Term
Variables
Definition
Quantities that are measured and controlled to ensure that the final product meets the highest quality.
Term
Controlled Variable
Definition
The variable that must be controlled for proper operation of the process.
Term
Measured Variable
Definition
The variable that is measured to maintain proper operation of the process
Term
Manipulated Variable
Definition
The variable that is adjusted to maintain proper operation of the process. Acts to maintain controlled variable to set point.
Term
Set Point
Definition
The desired value for proper operation of the process.
Term
Deviation
Definition
The difference between the actual value and the set point.
Term
Upset
Definition
A change in the demand on the system. Usually a factor outside the control loop that affects the controlled variable.
Term
Feedback
Definition
The continuous measurement and response to the information.
Term
Feedback Control Loop
Definition
The term used to define the instruments in a control system that gathers information, makes a decision, and takes an action.
Term
Sensors
Definition
Detect the value for the measured variable.
Term
Transmitter
Definition
Sometimes referred to as a transducer, converts the signal from the sensor to an instrument signal and sends it to the controller.
Term
Controller
Definition
The brains of the operation (usually a PLC or Computer). Recieves the instrument signal from the transmitter and compares it to set point and sends a signal to the final control element so it can be re-positioned to adjust controlled variable back to set point.
Term
Final Control Element
Definition
The device that is adjusted to change the manipulated variable. Pumps, valves, and dampers are examples.
Term
Response Time
Definition
The amount of time that a sensor takes to respond to a change in a measured variable.
