cathedral / duomo

Definition
a cathedral is the church within a Catholic diocese that contains the throne (cathedra) of the Bishop who oversees that diocese. While cathedrals tend to be large, every large church is NOT a cathedral. An Italian cathedral is sometimes referred to as a duomo. Although it sounds like the word dome--and even though many cathedrals have domes--the word itself is from the Latin domus, meaning "house." In this case, the term refers to the house of God.

Definition
The two primary political factions in late medieval Italy; the first sought unification of Italy under the leadership of the Germanic Holy Roman Emperor, the second under the papacy. Various Italian cities were aligned with one or the other side; Florence, for instance, was Guelph for nearly this whole period.
