Term
Compare the difference between an MI and a angina episode
Definition

Angina

  • Pain follows extertion or stress
  • Pain relieve by rest and/or nitro pills
  • pain last 3-5min
  • BP not effected
  • pt remian motionless

MI

  • pain often related to stress or exertion, but can occur at rest
  • rest doesn't relieve pain
  • nitro pill might help but doesn't not for long
  • pain is usually intense and long lasting
  • BP is lowered
  • pt can get comfortable

Term
Why do we use pre-med
Definition

Prevents infective endocarditis

Term
What is infective endocarditis?
Definition
infection of the heart caused by bacteria in either lining(endocarium) or valves. Bacteria from the mouth or intestinal often travel into the blood stream  but heart defects could lead to serious problems
Term
Who needs to still pre-med?
Definition

Patients with

1. artificial heart valves

2. a history of infective endocarditis

3. serious congenital heart conditions, including

  • unrepaired or incompletely repaired heart disease
  • six months after completely repaired congenital heart defect with prosthetic material
  • repaired congenital heart defect with prosthetic patch
  • 4.a cardiac transplant with problem in a heart valves
Term

Why are there new rules for pre-meds?

Definition
Pt's were developing drug-resistant bacteria
Term
What are the pre-med guidelines?
Definition

Amox. 2g 1hr prior to dental appt

Cephalexin 2g 1hr prior

Clindamycin 600mg 1hr prior

Azithromycin 500mg 1hr prior

Term
How can you recognize a pt in heart failure?
Definition
  1. elevated BP
  2. increased HR and respiration
  3. skin apprears ashen or grayish
  4. nails and lips blue
  5. jugular vein distention
  6. edema

Term

Compare the difference between LVF and RVF?

Definition

   LVF

  1. Symptoms associated with pulmonary congestion-
  2. Undue fatigue and weakness-
  3. Breathlessness-Dyspnea (difficulty breathing)-
  4. Cough and expectoration-
  5. Increased frequency of urination -
  6. Pale cool skin
  7. Increased BP and HR,
  8. narrowed Pulse pressure

 RVF

  1. Symptoms associated with venous congestion-
  2. Undue fatigue and weakness-
  3. Usually develops after LVF
  4. Signs of peripheral edema
  5. Cyanosis
  6. Prominent jugular vein
  7. Management

Term
What are the four things that are important to survival of a cardiac arrest?
Definition

1.  Early access to EMS

2.  Early BLS

3.  Early defibrillation

4.  Early ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

Term

Know how fast brain (cellular) death occurs in the cardiac arrest victim?

Definition
Cell death (brain death) occurs in 4-6 min after CA without BLS
Term

-Know what an AED is, when can you use it, and what rhythm’s respond to it.

Definition

Automated External DefibrillationAED are limited to treat rhythms such as Ventricular fibrillation (v-Fib) Pulseless Ventricular tachycardia (V-Tach)

Term

Be able to define which rhythm is associated with “quivering” of heart muscle

Definition

Fibrillation is an uncontrolled twitching or quivering of muscle fibers (fibrils). When it occurs in the lower chambers of the heart, it is called ventricular fibrillation.

Term

Why slow compressions are not effective?

Definition

It doesn't produce enough internal pressure

Term

How many compressions are needed to maintain circulation in a rescue situation?

Definition
100- 120 compressions per min
