Term
WHAT ARE HEMOLYSINS?
Definition
Exotoxins that lyse host cells, including Red Blood Cells. (A group of pore forming toxins secreted by β-hemolytic pathogenia Streptococcus & Staphylococcus)
Term
DEFINE HEMOLYSIS
Definition
The lysing of Red Blood Cells.  Hemolysins are exotoxins that lyse host cells, including Red Blood Cells.
Term
HEMOLYSIN MOA
Definition
Individual sub units of the hemolysin have a hook and stabilizer portion.  The hook (slender part) can wiggle into the membrane of the host cell.  Other subunits then follow inthe same way.  When all seven of the subunits are wedged into the host cells' plasma membrane, they aggregate into a nonselective pore.
Term
HEMOLYSINS
Definition

In Vitro (petri dish/test tube) Hemolysins lyse Red Blood Cells.

In Vivo (in the body) Hemolysins have an array of targets including the following:

Red Blood Cells & Muscle fibers.

These harvest Fe2+(iron)

Term
STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS
Definition

RESERVOIR:Nasal cavity of 20-50% humans (usually carried transiently)

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS: 1)MSA - mannitol salt agar

                                      2) Coagulase - S. aureus-->(Virulent forms) are Gram (+)

                                                                S.epidermis --> is Gram (-)

VIRULENCE FACTORS:Over 40 known for S. aureus (coagulase & staphylokinase, Hemolysins, Digestive enzymes, exfolative Toxin, toxic shock toxin,

Term
STREPTOCOCCUS β
Definition

Streptococcus pyrogenes

Group B strep

β - Beta hemolysis pattern =

"complete clearing due to lysis of Red Blood Cell

Term
STREPTOCOCCUS α
Definition

α - Alpha hemolysis =

"partial" clearing =

hemoglobin changes to yellow/green

Term
STREPTOCOCCUS γ
Definition

γ - Gamma hemolysis =

NO clearing =

Red Blood Cell is left alone
