Term
Phemothorax
Definition
Condition where the pleural cavity becomes filled with incoming air & as the negatively pressured pleural cavity fills with air the lung on that side collapses

ss- pain,difficulty breathing,anoxia

manage-activate EMS, stabilize, check ABCs
Term
Tension Pnemothorax
Definition
the pleural sac on one side fills with air & displaces the lung and heart which compresses the opposite lung. can happen spontaneously or secondary to injury

ss- shortness of breath, chest pain, cyanosis, poss lung collapse, absense of breath sounds

manage-activate EMS, stabilize, check ABCs
Term
Hyperventilation
Definition
excessively rapid rate of ventilation usually due to anxiety induced stress or asthma (ie panic attack). Causes gradual increase of CO2 in blood.

ss- difficulty getting air in,panic state, gasping, wheezing

manage- have pt breathe in thru nose & out thru mouth, calm them down, breathe in bag, refer to find cause of hyperventilation
Term
Lung contusion
Definition
aka pulmonary contusion. caused by chest trauma like a direct blow. blood and fluids accumulate in the lung tissue which interferes with gas exchange.

ss- chest pain, cough up grainy/bright red blood, cyanosis

manage-close monitoring, poss supplemented oxygen, refer to physician
Term
Pulmonary embolism
Definition
blood clot that forms w/in the veins & breaks off entering the cirulatory system that can become lodged in the branches of the pulmonary artery

ss-sharp chest pain (worses with deep breaths), shortness of breath, coughing up blood, cyanosis, elevated HR,poss cardiac arrest

manage-activate EMS, monitor, blood thinners
Term
Wolff Parkinson white syndrome
Definition
condition where theres an extra electrical pathway circuit in the heart. can lead to tachycardia and is the common cause of fast HR in infants/children

ss-rapid/fluttering heartbeat,dizziness,faiting,chestpain, difficulty breathing INFANTS-short of breath,not alert/active,poor eating,visible heart beat in chest

manage-calm them down, if they dont know they have this issue & show symp-activate EMS, if someone knows they have it & has these symp when active but not at rest refer to cardiologist
Term
Asthma
Definition
chronic inflammation of breathing passages. inflammatory reaction of asthma-triggered by external factors/situations,when exposed symp begin. Excercise induced=common trigger/chronic disease

when attack is triggered airways swell & secrete large amounts of mucus that obstruct airways. relates to EIB- exercise induce bronchospasms

ss-begin about 5-20 min into exercise & slowly diminished once exercise is stopped, wheezing, chest pain/tightness,prolonged shortnees of breath, extreme fatigue.

manage-medications, inhaler (15-20 min before activity)
