In today’s society, the youth have very few activities to stay active.   Options for adults getting involved with the youth, keeping them active and out of trouble are becoming harder and harder.  One outlet that can be utilized is being involved in organized sports. Being involved in organized sports will keep the youth active as well as staying out of trouble.  It provides a positive outlook for the youth that may not have much to look forward to after school.  It will give them something to do and provides another route to become better people in society. “Understanding adolescents can seem like a full-time job. They talk back, cut school, and break rules, all in an effort to find their places in the adult world. In response, parents, teachers, and communities are learning that they must take extra care during this crucial time to reinforce positive values in young people” (Development). National Clearinghouse on Families & Youth.
Term
Organized sports, such as football, basketball, and soccer, are designed to teach youth about the sport that they are engaged in but also provide guidance and assistance for life.  When teaching youth sports, it is important to make sure that the youth that are being taught these games are willing to learn, sacrifice, and dedicate their time and efforts not only to become better players but better people.

Coaching youth basketball is a positive tool in developing the overall character of young people in American society.  The knowledge that they will gain will be very constructive in developing their minds, bodies and spirits, as well as preparing them to lead successful lives as they get older.

Coaching youth basketball will allow parents to help keep youngsters off the streets and out of trouble.  It offers structure and discipline to the youth.  For the youth, it grants the opportunity to make a positive impact in society.

Definition

Coaching basketball can be, in a sense, a life changing event.  Coaches will be teaching habits that will stick with most youth for the rest of their lives.  Whether that coach may like it or not, he or she will be setting an example and teaching the youth lessons about life (good and bad). Generally youth are impressionable and they pick up on things.

It will allow the coach to occupy the minds of these youth and teach those who would otherwise be out doing things out on the streets that they are not supposed to do.

Remember that “Good words go a long way: keep it positive.  Everyone loves praise and encouragement….kids can never hear enough of ‘Great job,’ ‘Nice try,’ and ‘Good work.’  Positive encouragement is vital to a positive experience”   from the book Coaching Youth Basketball: A Baffled Parent's Guide to Coaching Youth Basketball. by David Faucher
Definition
By encouraging the kids and pushing them forward to succeed, it will further reinforce the care, patience and understanding that is needed to keep today’s youth motivated.  In addition, in the article "Seeing the Court: A Qualitative Inquiry into Youth Basketball as a Positive Developmental Context,” teaching young people skills other than sports while teaching sports can be very helpful in the development of that young person:
Term
While teaching life skills is important at any developmental stage, it may be most important during early to mid-adolescence (ages 12 to 16) as it is during this time that youth embark on several concurrent changes greatly affecting their social and emotional growth. One of the most prominent changes is the cognitive development of the individual, which is associated with the youth's ability to think abstractly, process information in a more sophisticated manner...

Giving and instilling structure and discipline in basketball can also be beneficial in the lives of the youth outside of basketball.

When guidelines are set and carried out, the youth must follow these guidelines or face consequences.  In basketball, that youth may have to sit out of practice or not allowed to play in a game.  But in life, if that youth does not follow certain rules or guidelines, it may lead them to be incarcerated or perhaps killed. So structure and discipline must be established or the youth will fall by the wayside.

Term

But for those youths that need an outlet, a place to go, it will give them the opportunity to learn the game of basketball and the game of life through basketball.

Kids who are confident in their athletic abilities mirror the level of happiness and satisfaction they have in their friendships, according to a study by researchers at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. The study was published in the October 2007 issue of "Journal of Sport Behavior." The study found that even a small amount of athletic skill helps kids have a better social life.

Coaches do not have to be in that youths life on a daily basis but when that coach is with them, show them that a little concern and care can go a long way in developing positive and constructive manners. Coaches can gain the youth trust just by asking how their day was, helping them with their homework, or even buying the team a meal or ice cream.  That may be all that some youth need from a coach outside of basketball.
Term

When that coach shows that they care about the maturity and growth of that youth, that youth can then began to make better choices not only in basketball but in life as well.  Of course, not all people would feel the same about coaching basketball or any other organized sport for various reasons.

Despite these perceived benefits, contemporary youth sports has its critics that see this highly popular children’s activity as plagued by major problems. Concerns have been voiced regarding the highly competitive nature of youth sports and it is often argued that young athletes become injured or burnout as a result of excessive stress and pressure. Still others are thought to learn inappropriate behaviors such as aggression or poor sportspersonship from their involvement.
Term

Although there may be some negative aspects with youth being involved in sports, major steps have been made to prevent serious or permanent injury.  Steps have been made to make sure that the kids get adequate health care.  Steps have been made to keep all youth involved in a positive manner.  Most of all, parents and volunteers have been and are being trained better to become effective teachers and role models for today’s youth to be first-rate people on and off the court.

Coaching youth basketball can be a positive tool in developing young people in society.  It is one way to keep the youth off the street and out of trouble.  It will give the youth something to look forward to as far as being and staying active.  It will allow those that want to be involved in today’s youths an opportunity to develop and structure the youth so that they will have a positive impact in society
Term
Without organized sports, in this case basketball, the youth will not be able to grow, mature and make a positive impact on today’s society. This is the time to catch the attention of the youth.  This is the time to take them to the side and show them, to prepare them, to nurture them, to explain to them, to teach them what the need to know to compete, survive and strive for excellence in the game of life.
