INDICATION:

wheezing, asthma, COPD, respiratory distress indicative of bronchoconstriction

ACTION:

acts on Beta-2 receptors within the lungs to dilate the bronchioles allowing for better external respiration, alveolar respiration, and oxygen intake

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

high tachycardia

DOSE/ROUTE:

(Inhalation)

2.5 mg in 3 ml NS, repeat as needed, neb lasts 5 minutes

Term
ASPIRIN
Definition

INDICATIONS:

cardiac chest pain, chest discomfort

ACTION:

prevents worsening coronary clot from occluding even more by making the platelets more slick decreasing chest pain and allowing perfusion

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

active GI bleed, unable to chew and swallow

DOSE/ROUTE:

(PO)

160-324 mg by mouth

Term

Definition

INDICATION:

cardiac chest pain, pulmonary edema 2nd to CHF exacerbation

ACTION:

short acting vasodilator that reduces preload, dilates coronary arteries to allow better perfusion to myocardial tissue

hypotension, ED meds, EKG showing right sided inferior STEMI

DOSE/ROUTE:

(sublingual)

0.4 mg [SBP 100-120]

0.8 mg [SBP 120-200]

1.2 mg [SBP >200 ]

repeat as needed q 5 mins

Term
EPINEPHRINE
Definition

INDICATIONS:

Anaphylaxis, severe asthma, cardiac arrest

ACTION:

acts on Alpha 1, Beta 1 and 2 receptors by acting as a bronchodilator, increases cardiac contractility, vasoconstrictor, and reduces chemical mediators by tightening capillaries

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

none

DOSE/ROUTE:

(intramuscular)

[allergy epi] 1:1000ml

Adult---> 0.3 mg

Pediatric---> 0.15 mg

[cardiac epi] 1:10,000ml

Term
NARCAN
Definition

INDICATIONS:

Opioid overdose w/ respiratory depression

ACTION:

works by knocking off the opioid from their receptors in the body reversing the effects

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

overdosing with good RR

DOSE/ROUTE:

(IN or IV)

(IN) 2 mg total

(IV) 0.4 mg titrated to effect

Term

Definition

INDICATIONS:

low BGL, confused pt with diabetes, hypoglycemia

ACTION:

acts as a simple sugar introducing sugar into the bloodstream raising the BG and mental status

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

unresponsive w/o a gag reflex, normal BGL

DOSE/ROUTE:

(buccal,PO)

15-25 g

Term
ZOFRAN
Definition

INDICATIONS:

nausea or vomiting

(PO)

Adult/Pediatric--> 4 mg (MAX 8 mg)

repeat PRN q 10 mins
