  1. IV catheter should be at least 18 gauge as solution is very viscous
  2. Ensure patency of IV, will cause tissue sloughing if interstitial
  3. Dextrose greater than 5% is a hypertonic solution, it is very irritating to the vein and can cause cerebral bleeding if not given slowly
  4. Patients with ICP, give half dose and reassess, Never withhold if the patients metabolic needs are deficient.

  • 0.5g to 1.0g per kg slow IV push,
  • Suspected head injury = 12.5g D50W slow IV push, 
  • Supplied as a preload of 25g dextrose in 50ml water

  • 0.5g to 1.0g per kg of D25W (2-4ml per kg) slow IV push
  • Push 25ml into the garbage and draw up 25ml of normal saline (This will give the correct concentration of D25W, 12.5g of dextrose in 50ml water/saline)
