Albuterol

Definition

AKA: Proventil, Ventolin

Class: Beta2 Selective sympathomimetic

Action: Bronchodilation

Indication: Asthma, bronchospasm

Contraindication: Hypersensitivity, symptomatic tachycardia

Precaution: Monitor vitals, pts with known heart disease

Dose: Adults = 2.5mg in 2.5-3mL NS nebulized over 5-15mins; Peds = 0.03ml/kg in 2.5-3mL NS nebulized

Aminophylline

Definition

AKA: Theophylline

Class: Xanthine bronchodilator

Actions: Smooth muscle relaxant; bronchodilation; mild diuretic properties

Indications: Asthma, bronchospasm, CHF or pulmonary edema pts

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, hypotension, peptic ulcer disease

Dose: Adult = ; Peds =

Epinephrine

Definition

Class: Non-selective sympathomimetic

Indications: Anaphylaxis, bronchial asthma, cardiac arrest

Precaution: Hypersensitivity

Dose: Adults = 0.3mg - 0.5mg SQ 1:1000 OR 0.3mg - 0.5mg IV 1:10000; Peds = 0.01mg/kg SQ/IM 1:10000

Definition

AKA: Ipratropium

Class:  Parasympatholytic

Indication: Cardiac patients with DIB

Dose: 500mcg MDI or SVN

Definition

AKA: Diphenhydramine

Class: Non-selective antihistamine; blocks future bonding to H1 sites

Indications: Allergic reaction or anaphylaxis

Dose: Adults = 25mg-50mg IV or IM; Peds = 1-2mg/kg IV or IM

Lactated Ringer's

Definition

Class: Isotonic crystalloid solution

Indication: manage hypovolemia (uses lactate as a buffer and contains electrolytes)

Contraindications: CHF or renal failure

Dose: KVO - bolus; 1L blood replaced = 3-4L fluid given; after eraching 100 systolic reduce rate to 100mL/hr

Definition

AKA: Detrose 5% in Water

Class: Hypotonic solution

Use/Indication: provides nutrients with dextrose; prevents circulator over load for patients iwth CHF; used to dilute concentrated drugs

Contraindications: Fluid replacement or to increase blood glucose levels

Precaution: Acidic & produces local irritation; extravasiation cases necrosis; circulatory overload; Dilantin or Inocor being use can cause a reaction

Dose: Micro drip set at KVO

0.9% NaCl

Definition

Aka: Normal Saline

Class: Isotonic crystalloid solution

Use/Indication: Replaces water and electrolytes; useful in heat exhaustion, freshwater dorwning, hypovolemia, DKA

Contraindication: CHF and circulatory overload
