ElectroMagnetic Spectrum

Tony Bonofiglo

second hour

It is the entire range of EM spectrum divided up by wavelengths
Definition
Term
Definition
longer than 30 cm. Examples: radio and TV Facts: *AM waves travel farther than FM waves *FM waves have less electric interference & sound better *TV's use AM radio waves for picture and FM for sound
Term
Microwaves
Definition
between 30cm and 1mm
Examples: cell phones and microwave ovens
Facts:
*Microwaves send info over long
distances
*police radar guns send out
microwaves which bounce off car and back to gun to show the speed of a car
*microwaves are used to monitor
airplanes and ships
Term
Infared Waves
Definition
between 1mm and 700 nanometers
Examples: heat from sun keeps us warm heat sensing goggles help hunters find deer
Facts:
*most objects give off heat
*it means "below red"
*Amount of waves depends on the heat of an object
How Important to Me? Infared waves keep the Earth at the right temperature so I can live
Term
Visible Waves
Definition
700nm-400nm
Examples: light from sun
light from a lamp
Facts:
*very narrow range of wavelengths
*all visible waves = white light
*different wavelengths are different colors
How are Visible Light Waves important?
Photosynthesis for plants make food for me
VISIBLE LIGHT WAVES ARE SEEN!
Term
Ultraviolet Waves
Definition
400-60nm
Examples: sunshine and tanning beds
Facts:
*causes sunburn
*helps body produce Vitamin D
*means "above violet"
How are they helpful? They can kill
bacteria
How are they harmful? They can cause
cancer
Term
X-Rays
Definition
60-0.001nm
Examples: airport security
bone x-rays in hospital
Facts:
*lead lined aprons block them
*you need to be still for a good X-ray or they need to try again
*airports have wands and booths to screen passengers
How helpful? Doctors can see if you
have a leak in your pump or if your bones are curving.
How harmful? If you have too many X-
rays it can kill living cells
Term
Gamma Rays
Definition
shorter that 0.1 nm
Examples: radioactive decay
nuclear explosives
Facts:
*has the most energy of all waves
*produced by supernova explosions and solar flares
*produced by hottest region of
universe
How helpful? They treat cancer/kill
bacteria
How harmful? They kill healthy cells
Term
