Term
Survivors at the end of the permian.
Definition
Plants, Animals good at collecting O2, Animals with light calcification.
Term
Victims at the end of he Permian.
Definition
Marine invertebrates (not good at getting O2), some ancestors of mammals.
Term
Pangea
Definition
Super continent.
Term
What are the 5 lessons?
Definition
1. Each extinction is different and complicated.
2. Mass extinctions typically mean that more than one thing went wrong at more or less the same time
3. The more different things go wrong simultaneously, the worse the extinction.
4. Mass extinctions cause major changes.
5. The role of luck in being pre-adapted to the crisis.
Term
How to calculate estimated time.
Definition
# or P (after decay)/ #P (before decay) + #D.
Term
Radiometric dating (to determine absolute time of an object)
Definition
Over time, in a radioactive crystal (such as quartz), some atoms will decay and change to another element that doesn't belong in the crystal.
Term
Other ways to determine absolute time.
Definition
Growth rings, Seasonal/annual cycles.
Term
What can seasonal cycles tell?
Definition
Winter- Finest muds (still water lets sediments settle)
Fall- Diatoms from leaves.
Summer- Algae
Spring- Diatoms
Term
What can tree rings tell?
Definition
Mild winters, cold winters, dry summers, wet summers.
Term
What also has rings?
Definition
Coral, elephant tusks, and dinosaur bones.
Term
Origin of Universe?
Definition
10-20 b.y.a.
Term
Big Bang theory? What's that?
Definition
Well, the universe is expanding from a point. It started out hot, then cools rapidly. As it cools, physics and chemistry become possible.
Term
Stars start with gas, what are these gases?
Definition
1. Hydrogen
2. Helium
3. Carbon
4. Neon
5. Oxygen
6. Silica
Term
What happens when a star burns out?
Definition
IMPLOSION!!!! The star collapses! THEN!!!! The star explodes! The result is called a supernova...how do we know this happens? The only way of making metals that are heavier than Fe is a supernova. It's like a reincarnation. Ooooo!!! A supernova flattens out and reconnects (IT REBIRTHS THE STAR!!!!) HOLY POOP!!! =]
Term
What's crust?
Definition
Well....
Felsic crust is continental crust and....
Mantle is oceanic crust
Term
What are terms for temperature in the mantle and what do they mean?
Definition
Ultramafic- Very hot
Mafic- Relatively hot
Felsic- Relatively cool
Term
What are Greenstone belts and what are they made of?
Definition
They are basically like glue for continents and are made of pillow lavas (Chlorite, mica).
