Term
Inner Core
Definition
The very inside of the Earth. Made of solid iron and nickel. Lots of pressure and heat!
Term
Outer Core
Definition
The next layer, just outside the Inner Core. Also made of iron and nickel. Also hot, but now in liquid form!
Term
Mantle
Definition
Semi-solid layers of molten rock, which includes the AESTHENOSPHERE, an area of the mantle on which tectonic plates move.
Term
Crust
Definition
The solid and thinnest layer of the earth made of many different materials. The crust includes the thinner oceanic crust and the thicker continental crust.
Term
Lithosphere
Definition
The rigid layers of crust that move around as plates over the AESTHENOSPHERE.
Term
Diveregent Boundaries
Definition
When two tectonic plates move away from one another. If this boundary occurs at two oceanic plates, then SEAFLOOR SPREADING can occur as magma bubbles up through the boundary from the mantle.
Term
Convergent Boundaries
Definition
When two tectonic plates move into one another. One plate usually subduct back into the aesthenosphere, while the other rises up creating mountain, trenches, or volcanoes.
Term
Transform/Sliding Boundaries
Definition
When two tectonic plates slide past one another, and no new lithosphere is created or destroyed! Sliding and buckling between the plates at these boundaries can lead to earthquakes.
